SLT Sunday Freezeout – 22nd July 2007

£2 buy in – 8 players - £12 pot

1st Catherine £11
2nd Christian £5
3rd Andy
4th Mark
5th Matthew
6th Chris L
7th Nick
8th Rees

Our first game for two weeks was another small game with eight starters.

-How they finished-

Rees came to grief when his two-pair A6 was beaten by Andy’s set of Queens, who also demolished Chris L’s stack a lot with three nines.

Catherine put Nick out when she made a straight with 24 on a 2-3-2-5-A board; with Nick on AT; Chris L and Christian also involved.

Chris L, all in with 50 chips to a 200 BB. Catherine made a raise and Christian called. 8-5-7 flop and Christian went all in with a further 420, which Catherine called. Christian won to stay in with A7 to Catherine’s Q7 and Chris L out on KT.

Matthew and Christian checked all the way with Q-K-9-T-A on the board. Christian put Matthew all in and Matthew called as he had only a short stack. Christian with A8, Matthew 79.

Mark out next, all in with AJ against Christian’s K6. Hit a six on the flop and a king on the turn.

Andy out, all in with A4 to Christian’s Q7. Andy happy when he hit top pair on the flop but gets unlucky when Christian hit a 7 on the turn and Q on the river.

Heads up and a very short contest; both evenly stacked but Catherine kept going all in making Christian fold; eventually he chose to call with Q7 to Catherine’s A6. Neither hit the board and Catherine won.

Knockouts:-
Christian 4
Catherine 2
Andy 1
_________________________________________________________________

Statsman Verdict:

Catherine’s return to the game couldn’t have gone better. After faltering early managed to pick up the pace and play Christian’s game, and outclass him. One for him to look out for.

Christian took some late chances to close in on Catherine but was unable to do more. Nevertheless another good showing but might find he has met his match.

Another returner saw a very solid showing, Andy attempted to stay in on the final few yards but shut out by Christian on the final turn (and river).

Consistent mid-field placings for Mark is beginning to show a return to form; but can count himself unlucky in the last. Would be foolish to rule this one out.

Matthew is steadily improving his form and another top five placing will surely boost his confidence, however has a lot to prove if he is to repeat his win from 6 months ago.

Chris L can count himself unlucky. Thought he had the hands to do it early but beaten each time. However is still a strong runner when on form.

Nick’s return after some time made him something of an outsider to win this; some early pace caused a few worries for his opponents but soon ran out of steam.

Rees was never a contender in this one. Beaten in several attempts to overtake and will have to reconsider his approach in the next.

Correction Markie... When I put Nick out I was on 2 4 not A4... (probably shouldn't own up to that but I was big blind!! and in actual fact the 2 in my hand played a big part in my raising post-flop...!)

SLT Sunday Freezeout – 5th August 2007

£2 buy in – 7 players - £14 pot

1st Rees £10
2nd Maria £4
3rd Anton
4th Chris L
5th Matthew
6th Christian
7th Mark

Anther two week break since the last game, and was a smaller game with just seven.

-How they finished-

Having had his stack slowly whittled down Mark was all in with not many chips with AJ, Rees on 88 which held up. Christian folded out of the hand.

A double elimination saw some heavy betting and Rees winning a long-shot draw on the river; his KJ completing a straight with T-7-2-A-Q. Matthew two-paired with AQ, and Christian was all-in on big blind with J6. Matthew had more chips and took a higher placing.

Chris L, short stacked, was all-in with A8, Rees the only caller with K5. A king flopped, and with no aces or eights appearing, Chris was out.

Anton, short stacked was all-in with T3 which Rees called, showing AT. A ten on the river gave them both top pair; Rees’s Ace gave him the better hand.

Rees, by now had about 90% of the chips and it was a short heads-up contest. Within a few hands Maria was all-in with pocket 9’s, Rees called with J3 and hit a jack.

_________________________________________________________________

Knockouts:-
Rees 6
_________________________________________________________________

Statsman Verdict:

Rees has finally made that long-expected win. Always up there in recent games it came as no surprise. He took some big chances early on which paid him off in a big way, taking a huge mid-game lead at their expense when he made a remarkable straight on the river to the utter disbelief of his contenders. The rest was easy and picked off the stragglers in a very short time to end the game after only 2½ hours. Not only did he win, but he did it in style by getting the first 100% knockout record.

An excellent return to the game after several weeks for Maria. A few games break seemed to freshen her play and manage fend off her opponents successfully. Sadly, no match for Rees here but she can consider herself a definite contender against him should he trip up in the future.
A steady performance from Anton who was seemingly at first never in the game but did well in the end by taking advantage of other’s misfortune.

Chris L was an early contender but unfortunately ran out of steam. Will need to show a steadier game if he is to win again.

Another frustrating game for Matthew who found a gap and was almost in with a chance before being shut out by Rees. Unlucky, and will be one to watch for.

After a long run of winning form, Christian stalled at the start and could never catch up. Nevertheless, he should never be ruled out.

Mark’s continuing run of poor performances hit rock bottom. Unlikely to do well again unless something drastic is done.

SLT Sunday Freezeout – 12th August 2007

£2 buy in – 6 players - £12 pot

1st Catherine £8
2nd Anton £4
3rd Mark
4th Matthew
5th Chris L
6th Rees

The games keep getting smaller, however one of our shortest games to date, finishing after just 2 hours of play.

-How they finished-

Catherine knocked out Rees when she hit quad threes on the river; 3-Q-3 flopped, with a 2 and a 3 coming next. Rees had pocket 7’s.

Anton took a chance with AJ overcards on a 6-5-2 flop to knock out Chris L, on pocket 8’s. Anton made an Ace on the river.

Matthew was out next, holding J3 on the turn with the board 7-2-10-J. Mark’s 8-9 gave him the straight and Matthew drawing dead.

K-A-K flop, some big betting, a J on the turn and Mark was all in with K4. Catherine called with A8. Another Ace on the river gave her the bigger full house, knocking out Mark.

Short heads up match, Anton all in short stacked with 2-3, Catherine on K2. Nobody paired and Catherine’s King won the game.

_________________________________________________________________

Knockouts:-
Catherine 3
Anton 1
Mark 1
_________________________________________________________________

Statsman Verdict:

Catherine’s return to the game and she won again. Realising that to win the game chances have to be taken, she could have been out towards the end of the game but fortunately lady luck was on her side and her two first knockouts went down to the river; against Rees she had him beaten with trip 3’s on the flop to make quad 3’s on the river; and against Mark her two pair overtook Mark’s trip Kings on the river when she made full house. Another great performance seemingly against the odds.

Another steady game from Anton saw him take an early lead and watch people drop out of the game; ending up heads up and finishing second once again. The King of Places surely must win soon.

A good return to form at last for Mark, a win seemingly well within grasp when it was snatched away unluckily on the river. Two straights against Matthew, and all-in on both occasions when it was made, he managed to make considerable inroads until a mis-read from Catherine happened to go her way. One to watch perhaps?

Matthew had a steady performance this game only to run into some big trouble against Mark; his trip Kings beaten by a straight and then being pushed out of the game when his top pair ran into another. Unlucky for him and will look to avoid trouble next time.

Chris L continues a slow run, out of form but still managing to hold on with a fight. A little unlucky to get outdrawn on the river, he will look to have odds going in his favour next time.

Last week’s winner saw him go out first in similar style. Despite an overcard and three of a kind on the board he just wasn’t going to throw away those pocket 7’s. Will have to play with more restraint next time if he is going to win again.

I really enjoyed last Sundays game (despite doing poorly in both games).
There seemed to be a lot of exciting play going on, rather than the constant checking and waiting to hit that I think plagued our past games.
I know she hates me saying this, but I do think Catherine (and Rees) play a much more aggresive game, which I think has added some spice to the pokerqueen games of late.
I'm just sorry I cant make next Sundays match.

Yes I do hate you saying that! Because, whilst SOMETIMES I may play aggressively I don't think I'm any more aggressive than Christian, Anton, Rees, Maria, Andy and maybe others...

Was a fun game on Sunday though. It's nice to get two games in, isn't it?

There was indeed and I won!

Mark wasn't there though so no report yet. Christian took down the stats and has left them in the pidgeon hole by the door to the bar for Mark.

SLT Sunday Freezeout – 2nd September 2007

£2 buy in – 10 players - £20 pot

1st Andy £14
2nd Mark £6
3rd Ed
4th Chris L
5th Rees
6th Anton
7th Shu
8th Christian
9th Maria
10th Catherine

-How they finished-

25 minutes in and Catherine (busy sending text messages) went all in on a T-J-Q flop. Andy all in and Rees calling, both showing AK, and split the pot.

9-3-3 flop, Andy and Maria all in against each other, Andy shows 7-3, Maria A-9. A seven on the turn gives him the full house.

Craziness next. 6-J-A on the flop, to which Andy bets, Christian also plays, Anton and Ed too. Ten on the turn and some more big bets with Anton getting out of the way. All three all in on the river, another 6. Christian shows a flush (J5c), Andy two-pair (AT) and Ed full house (T6); Christian out.

Our new player Shu out with very few chips left on BB. Mark raises, Ed calls. Low flop, Ed bets and Mark goes all in which Ed calls. Mark wins QQ, Ed TT, Shu out on J3

Double knockout. Anton all in with 57, Rees A8, Ed with KK. A-K-3 flop with two hearts; no more hearts to help Anton or Aces for Rees and they're both out.

Chris L next. Mark calls small blind, Chris checks. 3-4-6 flop. Mark check-raises all-in Chris which he calls. Chris J4, Mark 25 giving him the straight.

Bubble, and Ed all in with J7 against Andy's 88. Both an 8 and a J flop; Andy's set beats Ed's top pair.

Sibling rivalry; a long battle which Andy eventually prevailed, in the end it came down to rags versus rags which Andy made a flush out of.

_________________________________________________________________

Knockouts:-
Andy 3
Ed 3
Mark 2
Rees 1
_________________________________________________________________

Statsman Verdict:

Andy's return saw him take his first win this year having removed some of his nemeses early in the game. Judiciously played, he was always in the running at every point in the game, helped with donations from opponents who were foolish enough not to believe his bets. Beware.

After some torrid finishes, Mark finally managed to come through and finish a strong second, again helped with charitable chip donations. Still has plenty to prove but could this be a comeback?

A good third place from Ed, taking advantage of the cards going his way, though usually a chip middle man - removing them from unlucky opponents and quickly passing them on to others. Dangerous as no-one knows what he is doing!

Steady performance from Chris L with some good early opening moves but found himself outpaced towards the end. He will look to regain some early season form.

Rees's consistently good finishes early in the season have recently faltered a little, the frustration showing on occasion with some unpublishable language. Still one to watch for, but has he met his match in Ed?

Anton's decisive win last time out with preceding runner up finishes did not continue. He will blame bad fortune and Ed.

Shu's first game which she seemed to enjoy; a sort of yin to Ed's yang.

Christian's winning form seems well and truly gone and, without meaning to be malicious, rightly so.

Maria must revise her play and try not to go all in against someone who has a better hand.

Catherine was pre-occupied with sending text messages this time around, and continues a familiar theme this season of winners finishing last in their next game.

SLT Sunday Freezeout – 9th September 2007

£2 buy in – 6 players - £12 pot

1st Maria £8.50
2nd Rees £3.50
3rd Anton
4th Simon H
5th Chris L
6th Ed

--Analysis and results courtesy of Rees--

-Si Holland playing-return after a long absence

-Si picked up most of the early pots

-Rees took a chunk out of Anton's stack when 3 Aces came on the board with Rees holding the fourth. Anton later responded the favour with an all-in move with KQ which held up with a king on the flop.

-Ed first out. A flop of 5-6-7 all diamonds with Si, Rees and Ed staying in. A fourth diamond on the river saw Ed all in with 3d, but Si called with Kd and Ed was doomed.

-Second phase started with arrival of Chris L and a little mixing it up. Si's chips flowed in the reverse direction.

-Chris next out. 7-8-3 all diamond flop saw Rees raising. Chris went all in in response, Rees called with 8s7d, Ah6d gave Rees a flush is this correct?

-Heavy betting exchanges and chip flows until Simon went all in with As4c. Rees called with JcQh. Four clubs hit the deck, Rees winning with the higher flush.

-An explosive finale. Anton was short stacked and went in with 4s6h just to make his big blind obligation. 8c9hQc flopped, then Ac on the turn giving Maria 3 aces, as she was sitting on pocket rockets. Maria drew Rees, sitting with ThTd into going all in. The river didn't matter, Maria wins with no heads up needed.

___________________________________________________________

Knockouts
Maria 2
Rees 2
Simon 1

___________________________________________________________

Statsman's apprentice notes:

An entertaining game, marred by lack of attention from some players and the need for constant reminders to put in blinds or bets.

Simon added an interesting dimension to the game, combining the apparant naïvety of newcomer/occasional players with a daunting calling station approach that served him well initially but came undone in the second half.

Ed played far more conservatively than usual. It didn't pay off.

Chris played his usual steady considered game, and can put his exit down to luck as much as anything.

Anton never really got into a strong position, but used patience and judicious all-ins to come back a number of times. Another solid game.

A strong showing from Rees after some recent early exits. He also came back strongly a few times and won some big pots, one with four Aces. He was unlucky at the finish to face Maria sitting on pocket rockets.

Maria was always strong in this game and played her usual forceful, aggressive game. This time it paid off. It's unlikely to be the last.

Many thanks to Rees for recording the result. Though he could remember to dot his 'i's in future.

SLT Sunday Freezeout – 23rd September 2007

£2 buy in – 4 players - £8 pot

It was a dark and stormy night......

A game confined to four poker queen die hards.

Catherine was first out fairly early in the game, holding A7 and risking an all-in raise after picking up two pairs on the river with a 2 K 6 6 7 board. Unfortunately, she ran into Rees holding KK and slow playing a full house, so it was goodnight Vienna.

There followed a long highly competitive tussle which lasted well into the second half, with three players showing each other maximum respect and chips flowing around the table. The break came with Andy and Rees evenly stacked and holding the bulk oif the chips between them. Andy, holding A2, chased a straight after a 2 J 3 flop and a 4 on the turn, calling Rees' three raises, holding 10 10. When a K came on the river Andy, heavily pot committed, went all in. Rees called and Andy exited stage right.

This left Rees in a massive chip lead over Maria, who very soon went all in with a pair of deuces. In a kind of reversal of fortune to two weeks previously, she found Rees holding QQ. The board of 6 A 10 5 J sealed Maria's fate.

1. Rees
2. Maria
3. Andy
4. Catherine

Knock outs - Rees 3

Statman's apprentice writes:-

Another early exit for Catherine. She is surely better than this, and a re-think of strategy may be required.

Another solid showing by Andy, who remains an emerging force.

Another high finish for Maria, always a challenging opponent.

From one extreme to another for Rees, as he goes from first out one week to Winner the next. A more circumspect approach, and greater willingness to fold, did the trick on this occasion.

SLT Sunday Freezeout – 7th October 2007

£2 buy in – 5 players - £10 pot

1st Chris L £7
2nd Mark £3
3rd Stuey
4th Anton
5th Rees

Chris can certainly celebrate a return to form after some poor recent results.

The game was essentially a stalemate throughout the first 2 hours, and it was only the heavy blind levels that forced some action. Early aggressive play from Stuey saw him build a healthy stack; however both Mark and Rees took advantage of his not knowing when to put the brakes on. Anton made some chips from some early good hands, but quietened shortly after, and was later all in with QJ against Rees and Chris L; he made a Q and a J on fourth and fifth streets and survived.

A frustrating early game from Mark saw his stack halved before double-and-a-halfing up after committing heavily to a pot on a draw which he made, taking most chips from Stuey and some from Rees who had also invested heavily before deciding to bow out. Rees later made some chips back from Stuey on AJ high against Stuey's A6, but despite this late double-up, Rees gave them all back again when he reckoned Stuey was on yet another bluff, only to find that he'd made a set of nines.

Now he was very short stacked with not enough for the small blind in the next hand. Anton had also made a double up, and ended up all in on the same hand on a King high flop with two hearts. Stuey, in the hand as well, called. Rees was out with no hope on T3, and so was Anton when his KQ got out drawn by Stuey's K6(h) making a flush.

A tense battle followed between the three, with Mark taking a more aggressive approach to limping opponents. Evidently a nicotine craving got the better of Stuey and he went all in with J5, running into Chris L's KK and he was out.

Blinds were now 200/400, a single bet now pretty much a tenth of all the chips that were on the table. A steady early battle saw chips changing hands for a while; up to 300/600 and Mark was forced all in, showing J9(h). Chris L had AA but two flopped hearts and another on the river evened out the stacks once again. Chris then managed to whittle down Mark's stack further before he was again forced all in, this time with 7-9 to Chris's A9. The Ace held up, and Chris took his third win of the year and his first for 6 months.

Knockouts:-

Chris L 2
Stuey 2 (double)

SLT Sunday Freezeout – 21st October 2007

£2 buy in – 8 players - £16 pot

1st Anton £11
2nd Mark £5
3rd Maria
4th Nick
5th Rees
6th Chris L
7th Ed
8th Catherine

No game last week as nobody was around. Catherine continues to be consistent by finishing last (again).

Limper of the night would be Chris L, getting reduced to one small blind, staying in flopping a straight, and then later getting a runner-runner flush.

Ed was out second in an unsteady performance, all in with 77, however Maria's KQ hit the flop.

Rees, trying to return to form made a lot of early success with aggression. Unfortunately it came to work against him in soon enough; doubling Nick up on a bluff which didn't succeed. He will do well to remember that Nick doesn't get bluffed easily!

After the break the game got a bit crazy. Chris L, the next victim went all in; Nick called, Rees called, Anton all in too, and Maria staying in as well. Nick and Rees folded to Maria's all in on a raggy flop, leaving Anton and Chris L. Anton won a huge pot with QQ, Chris L out (KJ) and Maria taking the change - and the knockout.
A few hands later Mark went all in, and everyone folded - or so he thought. Nick had already called but Mark had already mucked his cards and Nick won the pot by default. Oops.

Mark and Rees now made up the blinds with the remainder of their stacks, with Nick staying in. Rees showed AA, Nick 77 and Mark J6. Mark won the pot when he made a flush on the river.

The two all in again with Nick again in the next hand. Nick with AT, Rees KT and Mark 47. Mark won the pot when he hit a 4 on the flop, and Rees was out. A lucky double escape.

The very next hand a flop of all clubs 2-6-A and then another club on the turn, both Anton and Nick all in. Nick shows AA making a set but Anton had King of clubs; no help for Nick on fifth street and he was out.

Two hands into the last three and Maria and Anton were all in against each other with 6-2-A flop. Anton shows K8 (flush draw) and Maria 68. Anton made a flush on the turn, and Maria's out in third.

The heads up was no contest, with Anton on about 90% of the chips; sure enough three hands in he won, 44 making a straight to Mark's K3.

Congratulation to Anton for another patient win.

Knockouts

Anton 3
Maria 3
Mark 1
