this is good too as it does do that bext x out of y figure that i have been going on about. however it doesn;t take into account the variable which is the no of players playing each week - thus giving a different amount of points - which my alternative system does. although you could argue that my system also has a flaw in that why should you get 10 points for winning in a five-handed game and the same in a ten-handed one, surely the latter should be worth more: if this makes sense.

it's too early still anyway to be thinking about changing it, and most people seem happy with the way it is - let's keep an occasional eye on it, maybe every 7 or 8 games or so.

I think we shouldn't change now, even though I think both of these other systems have advantages over the one we are using.

I like particularly Paul's system as it rewards first place by more than just one point over second. One thing that occured to me last week when heads-up with Maria was that with my short stack compared to her huge chip lead it was not only very difficult for me to beat her but to be frank it was not worth the effort for one extra point. (I'm certainly not saying btw Maria that I could have beaten you but didn't bother. Just that this was one of the things that went through my mind when I looked at the enormity of my task.) If I'd been playing for a larger differential however I might have been more tempted to put loads of effort into being beaten in half an hour instead of 2 mins. In fact the more I think about it more evenly-stacked heads-up contests fall even more into this category. You could be playing for an hour for the difference between 7 and 8 points.

So while I actually like some of the ideas that have come up since we have started playing I think we must now stick with the structure we have for the duration of this competition which I think we agreed would be until Christmas. Any new structure, in my opinion, cannot be implemented once the competition has started but should be discussed as possibilities for next year's league.

PS Very much looking forward to the end of year club outing actually. Think we should have something quite formal like getting a bit dressed up and going out for dinner and a game somwhere. Maybe use it also for a kind of AGM so we can set the structure for next season (without getting too committee-bound!). Maybe as well as the presentation for the league winner some fun prizes that we can vote for too (Worst Bad Beat, Best Come Back, Most Limpet-Like Performance, Longest PS on a Forum Post etc).

Just for interest following last nights discussions, I've made the results a little different. Scoring is the same, except 3rd gets +1, 2nd +3 and 1st +6 points. This way, people playing are always rewarded with points, but the rewards are greater for finishing highest - the difference between 3rd and 4th is 2 points, 2nd and 3rd 3pts, and 1st/2nd 4 points.

Eg in a 10 handed game:
1st 16
2nd 12
3rd 9
4th 7
5th 6
6th 5
7th 4
8th 3
9th 2
10th 1

If we were to change our results, they would look like this:

92 Paul
69 Mark
69 Helen
68 Maria
64 Lisa
60 Anton
53 Matthew
33 Chris L
24 Dave
20 Chris VS
11 Jason
10 Matt

I believe we should consider other scoring systems, though it is questionable to change in the middle of a season.

I agree. I think other scoring systems do have advantages but that is for next season.

We need to decide when this one ends.

In the meantime here are the latest standings including sunday's game.
