hi all

I've been looking at possible structures for our forthcoming Heads Up tournament and have come up with one which I think is the most promising.

It will be a Double Elimination Tournament run over a couple of months. The attached chart shows the structure.

http://www.homepokertourney.com/docs/blinds-hu-double-14-1.pdf

It looks slightly more complicated than a normal tournament structure but the advantage is that with double elimination a player has to lose two games to go out completely. This should give all players a fair crack at the whip and reduce some of the luck factor which can be inherent in heads-up play.

This structure starts with 8 games but then the winners of games 1 and 2 play each other and the losers of games 1 and 2 play each other in another strand. The winners of the winners and the losers strand then play each other in the final. This in my opinion gives all competitors most value and opportunity whilst keeping the number of games at a managable level.

I suggest a £5 buy-in with payout structures as suggested on the sheet.

Games can be played at the players' convenience as long as they are played within a set time period.

It would make things a lot easier however if we could get exactly 16 entrants. There are twelve of us, including Jason, and we could invite others from the poker night also.

Any thoughts or comments?

Looks good. 16 would be easier.

How many games in each match, bearing in mind a game could last one hand?

I hadn't really looked at the payout structure on the chart actually and now I have I suggest a straight 70/30 for first and second place instead.

1 - Double elimination is a good idea. I;ve used this system before for tournaments I have run and it works quite well. It's commonly used in club tennis ladders. Payout structure is also good.

2 - A fiver might put off some new people. Maybe £3?

3 - I strongly believe each match should be best of three. Not one match. It's meant to be a proper test, not luck.

4. I also believe blinds should be ten not fifteen minutes to get the pace going.

5. Maybe we could do the draw in the bar one Sunday before or after our league game?

I reckon we can get 16. Bob would play I think, he has expressed interest.

I'm happy with all of this but I think a fiver should be acceptable. This is for a tournament which might last two months and everybody will get at least two games out of it.

Happy with best of three and if that is the case we would need faster blinds to get the games done in an evening.

Any other comments?

ps I'd like to get this going as soon as possible so can people let me know if they are happy with it and would like to enter. Obviously league members don't have to enter if they don't want to but I think it will be fun.

I don't understand that chart at all but if someone explains in person to me how it works, I'm in! Fiver should be fine. Steve Imrie also expressed interest after the poker night ...

All it really means is that it will be a knockout tournament, but if you lose the first match it is not the end: you would have a second chance. It looks complicated but actually is fairly straightforward. We can talk about it on Sunday.

I agree with Paul on his points, esp the number of games in each match. We would definitely need (multiples of) 16.
