Last night I fulfilled a longstanding engagement with an old friend of mine called Matt, who is a member of a private club on Shaftesbury Avenue (Century Club).
They run occasional £30 tourneys for members and guests so I went as the guest last night. 'There might be some celebs', Matt said.
Little did I know that there would be A-list quality of the likes of:
- Beppe from Eastenders
- Either Hale or Pace
- Someone from Green Wing
- Dexter Fletcher
Shielding myself from the glare of such intense fame I buckled down to lose my starting stack, and after the break amd a rebuy or two I was on the button with about 4000 chips with blinds at 300-600.Time to make a move, as everyone folded to me and I looked down to see 5-5.
I made it one bet to go. Small blind folds. Big blind calls.
Flop comes 772. One more bet from me, BB calls.
Turn is a 5. I now have a full house, 5s over 7s. More betting.
River is a 7. I'm getting all my chips in only to be instantly called. Big blind was holding A7 and made quads on the river.
And who, you may ask, was this Big Blind with four 7s? None other than comedian Richard Herring. Coincidentally I saw his (v funny) stand-up show in Edinburgh a month ago. Last night wasn't so funny. |

This sounds like some bad dream - in a funny sort of way.
I don't think I could quite contain myself at one of these.

Norman Pace is actually a pretty good player with some decent tournament results under his belt.

Very unlucky to hit that 7 on the river but I'm surprised yo went in at that stage. Any pocket pair over 5s would have beaten you. He could easily have been betting a medium pair.
Sounds like a fun night out.

I hear you Anton, possibly a little rash. But also possibly just a strong and reasonable button move with something half decent. I didn't think (correctly) that he had a pair, and one further bet with a board of 772 and me holding 55 seemed reasonable. Fourth made it seem that I was going to be in luck but fifth took it all away.
With my stack (4k) only allowing 4 rounds of the board I felt it was a risk I was prepared to take.
I wanted to actually try and steal the blinds, and once the cards flopped I couldn't get away. I had been relatively aggressive just prior to this and was hoping for a double through to then slow down and hopefully make it deeper in. It was at the stage of the tournament where I wanted to gamble a little in order to get a good stack. But anyway, hindsight is always handy!
Pace went out shortly after me on another table but yes he is handy apparently and devotes a fair amount of time to it (I *think* he went over to the WSOP this year and his wife runs a poker travel related business).
As always, you live and learn.
Btw, this tourney had somewhere between 50-60 player with a first prize of £2k! |

Well i think you were evens to win that hand.. but one monster vs an even bigger one! ... i lost a big stack the other day in stud when my FH got beaten on 7th by opponents fourth 9.
Do you think going all-in before the flop might have made him fold? |

This is indeed true (about Norman Pace and his wife). I have read an interview with him in a mag that I can't bring to hand right now but he seems both to know what he is doing and be very interested in the game. He and his wife both played at the WSOP. She won her place online and he bought in.
That is an amazing payout for a 30 quid tourney. That first place payout is higher than the prize pool. How does that work?
